Portofino 2023

In 2023 the famous and beautiful Italian harbour cove Portofino and the Royal Italian Yacht Club will host the eight metre class world championship regatta. This has to be the place to be for magnificent picture and film oppertunities of these Kings Class sail yachts.

Enkhuizen 2020-2021

The year 2020 should have been an amazing year. A year where the mighty eights would return to the Netherlands after 25 years. But the global pandemic changed that. Even a rematch in 2021 was to soon. who knows, maybe the royal eights will return to the Netherlands in the near future. Hopefully the Netherlands will have a racing fleet by then. Since there are some eights in the Netherlands still in the process of restauration. Conowago, Ranja & Hollandia 1 to name a few.

Cowes 2019

The 2019 Eight Metre World Championship hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron was a splendid event and only seven years since the last time the Eight Metre Class was invited by the RYS in 2012. After a week of races at the Panarai Britisch Race week for classic yachts. The Eight Metre World Cup was held in very good conditions and tremendous socials.

Langenargen 2018

Langenargen on Lake Constance hosted the 2018 World Cup with 23 yachts competing. the world cup Lake Constance is home of the biggest collected fleet of First Rule 8mR yachts anywhere, and this World Cup showed a field of 7 first rulers showing their clouds of sails. Hankø 2017

The 2017 World Cup was held in Hankø, Norway and was a birthday present from IEMA’s honorary president; H.R.M. King Harald. The regatta was sailed just outside the Oslo fjord against a backdrop of the “Norge” waiting at the entrance of the fjord greeting sailors going in and out to the racecourse. The fleet consisted of 28 team from 9 nations on 3 continents. The first days started with a stiff breeze, but the spectacle was saved for the last day. Toronto 2016

Lake Ontario was the scene for the 8 Metre World Cup Championship, Hosted by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, 12 nations of World Class sailors raced for the coveted 8 Metre World Cup Champion title.  The fleet’s status was secured when the Canada’s Cup, the most prestigious regatta on the Great Lakes, was sailed in the 8mR class in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1950’s. Today, many of the 8mR yachts from this earlier era are still competing at regattas on Lake Ontario.

Kopenhagen 2016

From August 17th to 21st, it was time for the Wessel and Vett Cup 2016 in Copenhagen. At the same time, the Royal Danish Yacht Club celebrated its 150th anniversary and in addition to the eights, the twelves and the 5.5 mR class regattas were on the program. For the 8 mR class it as the European Cup (Copa d'Italia) and the Neptune Trophy. The Worlds are sailed in Toronto, therfore its only the Copa d'italia, the First rule cup and the Neptune Trophy

Geneva 2015

The 8 mR World Championship ended in Geneva after a hot-summer week, nevertheless sailable with mostly with a light local thermal wind except one fresh-breeze day. 10 races were completed and the title went to Jean Fabre SUI on ‘Yquem II’ with Jean-Marc Monnard SUI steering, achieving a goal he had been aiming for since quite some time. The defending Champion ‘Hollandia’ of Tim Van Rootselaar NED earned Silver, Mark Decelles CAN with his ‘Lafayette’ Bronze. La Trinite sur Mer 2014

No less than 27 challengers participated under idyllic racing conditions in the unforgettable championship in La Trinity sur Mer, France. About ten nations spread out all over the world were represented by a selection of 8mR boats which simultaneously testified both to the Class’ glorious past and to its current prowess. Helsinki 2013

Helsingfors Segelsällskap, on island Liuskasaari in Helsinki as the organizing club of the 2013 8mR World Cup, delivered fantastic racing in beautiful surroundings and with a warm welcome ashore for the teams. Cowes 2012

Flensburg 2011

Racing for their Robbe & Berking World Championships, the 8-Metres witnessed an superior performance by Hollandia (NED) who, having been pushed hard by Lafayette (GBR) and YQuem II (SUI) all week, secured the title emphatically with two wins in the final day’s two races. Able to discard a DSQ for an infringement earlier in the week, Ruud van Hilst and Jos Fruytier’s 2005-built 8-Metre won five of the nine races to take first overall.

Hyeres 2009

After the weekend tune up races, which served as the annual regatta at sea hosted by the swiss club Societe nautique Geneve (SNG), the sixteen 8mR that were present in Hyeres engaged in their world championship on Monday the 14th of September on a sunny course and in an ideal breeze, ranging from 15 to 29kts. Norway 2008

Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (KNS) is pleased to welcome you to the International 8 metre World Championship. The sailing will take place just off the Hankø island in open water, where wind and sea conditions are quite predictable. The World Championship will be a central part of celebrating the 125th anniverary of Royal Norwegian Yacht Club. Many sailors have memories of the jubilee races in 1983 with King Olav sailing his Sira. Now King Harald is following up the tradition from his father and will be a keen participant with fully refurbished Sira.
